WHAT IS A SIGNATURE OR INSERT ?

Signature — a folded group of pages (usually 4–8 sheets, making 8–16 pages) that are sewn or bound together. Multiple signatures are stacked and bound to form the complete book block inside a journal. It's the fundamental unit of traditional bookbinding (Coptic, saddle-stitch, etc.).

Insert (or refill) — a general term for replaceable pages that go inside a journal cover, common in ring-bound or disc-bound systems.
